Marine and Boating

Boats present unique power challenges: limited space, exposure to moisture and salt air, and the need for reliable 12V systems alongside AC power for creature comforts. Most boats have a house battery bank separate from the starting battery, but that bank may be undersized, poorly maintained, or nearing end of life. A portable power station can supplement or replace an aging house bank without rewiring the boat.

Power needs vary dramatically between day boats and cruisers. A day trip might only need phone charging and a cooler. Weekend cruising adds cabin lights, refrigeration, and electronics. Extended cruising requires enough capacity and solar to achieve energy balance over multiple days at anchor.

Practical note: Marine electronics (chartplotter, VHF, AIS) typically draw 2 to 5 amps at 12V (25 to 60 watts). A marine refrigerator uses 3 to 5 amps when running. Cabin lights and fans add modest loads. A 1000Wh power station can run typical cabin loads for 1 to 2 days at anchor. Note: 12V fridges and fans can cycle frequently in warm weather, using more energy than expected.

The EcoFlow GLACIER provides efficient cold storage without relying on the boat's electrical system.

Marine conditions also introduce humidity and salt exposure. Our recommended systems are water-resistant, but always store them safely below deck or in dry storage when not in use.

Tip: Keep an expansion battery on hand for always available power, just in case.
