Portable Power Stations

A portable power station is a rechargeable battery system designed to store and deliver electricity. They’re rechargeable from multiple sources, including solar panels, and can convert electricity to run a multitude of devices.

Sizes range from compact units built to top off a phone or laptop, to higher-capacity systems that can run a refrigerator, power tools, or several days of home backup during an outage.

You won’t need complicated installation or permits for a portable set-up. Just get a compatible system that fits your needs, and you’re set. You can add to them as your needs change, take them with you when you want, and reuse for years and years.

What to Look For

  • Capacity (Wh): Watt Hours. Determines how long the unit can run your devices before needing a recharge. We group stations into four ranges: Compact (up to 500Wh), Mid-Range (500–1,500Wh), High Capacity (1,500–3,000Wh), and Ultra-High Capacity (3,000Wh+).
  • Output (W): Watts. Determines what you can power at once. Check both the continuous rating (what it sustains) and the surge or "lifting" rating (the brief peak it can handle when a device first switches on, like a compressor or motor).
  • Battery chemistry: Most current stations use LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate), valued for long cycle life and stability. Sodium-ion is a newer alternative that tolerates cold-weather charging better than lithium.
  • Recharge speed and sources: Look at how fast a unit charges from AC power, and whether it also accepts solar panels, a car outlet, or a vehicle alternator — useful for RV, van, and off-grid use.
  • Weight and portability: Larger-capacity units are heavier. Balance the runtime you need against how often the unit will be carried or moved.
  • Expandability: Some stations accept add-on expansion batteries, letting you increase capacity later without replacing the whole unit.
  • Ports and outlets: Match the number and type of AC outlets, USB-A/USB-C ports, and DC outputs to the devices you plan to run.
