Off-grid households typically use somewhere between 3 and 10 kWh per day, depending on how many appliances are running and how efficient they are. A simple rule of thumb helps size solar to match: roughly 200W of solar panels for every 1kWh of daily use, assuming about five hours of usable sun. Battery storage then needs to cover you through a stretch of low sun — typically 1.5 to 2 days of your daily use held in reserve.

Light, Medium, and Heavy Use

  • Light use: Weekend or seasonal cabin use — LED lighting, a small fridge, and device charging, without daily demands piling up. Look for 1,000–2,000Wh of capacity — our Mid-Range collection fits here. A portable solar panel (100–200W) keeps it topped off between visits.
  • Medium use: Full-time living with a small footprint, around 2–3kWh of daily use. Following the sizing rule above, that calls for roughly 400–600W of solar and 3,000–6,000Wh of battery storage for 1.5 to 2 days of reserve. Look to our High Capacity or Ultra-High Capacity collections, and consider an expansion battery to reach that reserve target.
  • Heavy use: Full-time living with higher daily demand — a residential fridge, entertainment, and power tools — often running 8–10kWh per day. That level of storage (7,500– 10,000Wh of reserve) and the matching 1,500W+ of solar typically call for a hub-based setup that scales with multiple batteries rather than a single portable station. Whatever the scale, the same two numbers drive the decision: your daily usage in kWh, and how many days of reserve you want on hand when the sun doesn't cooperate.

Recommended bundles: Three Levels of Setup

Level 1: Cabin Weekends and Seasonal Use

For overnight stops, short camping trips, and charging devices while keeping lights and fans running. Handles phones, laptops, cameras, LED lights, and small 12V accessories. Not intended for running a refrigerator overnight or powering AC appliances continuously.

Power stations: EcoFlow RIVER 3 (245Wh) or RIVER 3 Plus (286Wh, expandable to 858Wh). Compact and portable enough to move between your vehicle and campsite.

Solar panels: EcoFlow 110W Portable Panel or RICH SOLAR 100W Portable Briefcase for ground deployment at camp.

Level 2: Full-Time Small Footprint

For full-time residents in efficient tiny homes, yurts, or small cabins. Supports a 12V refrigerator, lighting, devices, water pump, and occasional small appliance use.

Power stations: EcoFlow DELTA Pro or DELTA 3 Ultra Plus. The DELTA Pro expands to 25 kWh for serious storage.

Solar: 400 to 800 watts. Multiple RICH SOLAR MEGA 200 or MEGA 250 panels.

Add: EcoFlow GLACIER portable refrigerator as an efficient alternative to residential fridges, using a fraction of the power.

Level 3: Full-Time High Demand

For larger off-grid homes running residential appliances, power tools, and higher daily loads. May include backup generator integration for extended cloudy periods.

Power stations: EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 with Extra Batteries. Build a system from 4 kWh up to 48 kWh as needed.

Solar panels: 400W or more recommended. Multiple RICH SOLAR MEGA 200 or MEGA 250 panels for permanent roof installation, or EcoFlow 400W Portable Panel for high-output portable use. With 400W+ of solar, you can recover significant capacity during daylight hours even while running loads.

Expansion: Add an Extra Battery to double your capacity. The DELTA Pro supports up to 25kWh of total storage with multiple batteries.
