A power outage matters all too fast once you factor in a refrigerator — food starts to spoil within four to six hours without power. A backup power station keeps the fridge, lighting, and essential devices running while the grid is down, and sizing it to the length of outage you're likely facing is key. Having solar backup is a blessing.

Light, Medium, and Heavy Use

  • Light use: Short outages of four to twelve hours — keeping a fridge cycling, a few lights on, and phones charged. Look for 500–1,000Wh of capacity — our Compact to Mid-Range collections fit here.
  • Medium use: Overnight outages of twelve to twenty-four hours, covering a fridge, whole-room or whole-house LED lighting (50–100W), and ongoing device charging. Look for 1,000–2,000Wh of capacity with at least 1,000W of continuous output — our Mid-Range and High Capacity collections fit here.
  • Heavy use: Extended, multi-day outages, especially if you're integrating with home wiring through a transfer switch for seamless backup (installed by a licensed electrician). Look for 3,000Wh or more with 2,000W+ of continuous output, and consider an expansion battery for added runtime. Pairing in a solar array (roughly 800–1,600W, several panels' worth) helps sustain power through a blackout that runs past a day or two.

Whatever the outage length, prioritize what actually needs continuous power — refrigeration and lighting go a lot further than trying to run everything at once.
